Tactical Tomahawk is like a hatchet or an axe with a straight shaft and it its origin is in North America.It was also used by European Colonials as well for hand-to-hand battle. At first, it had a stone head, but brass or iron heads wereapplied more later. Tomahawk heads made of metal were at first used as in trade for food exchange and other supplies with Native Americans.

The stone was usually tightened to a wooden handle in a few ways, like setting the stone through the hole in the wood or tying the stone to a handle. Native Americans used to bury a hatchet when peace treaty had been attained with an foe and “to bury the hatchet” phrase originates from this custom and it is still frequently used today.

Tactical Tomahawk shaft is commonly less than one metre in length and it is was originally made from maple or ash. Measured from toe to hand, the edge is usually for inches long. Tactical tomahawk heads made of stone were earlier made of polished soapstone and utilized in traditional rituals of Native Americans. They besides had a pipe bowl which was used forsmoking tobacco through the tomahawk. This strange pipe as well appeared in its metal variations. Pipe tomahawks are North American artifacts sometimes also made by Europeans for trade purposes or as diplomatic presents.

Tactical tomahawks have lost their original purpose are nowadays utilized just in sport called tomahawk throwing which are entertained only among American historical re-enactment groups. Also, there has been established a category within a competitive knife throwing sport where tactical tomahawks are applied for this role instead of knives. A small number of professional craftsmen in US can actually hand made hawks that resemble the traditional tomahawks in every sense.

In 2001 American Tomahawk Company in collaboration with professional custom knife producers made the Vietnam tomahawk which has become very popular since then. These modern day hawks contain wooden handles and a leather sheaths. The US forces used it during the Vietnam war and hence the name Vietnam tomahawk.
